Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere L120, john deere l120, switch jumper

Question
QUESTION: Working on an JD L120 that every time the brake is released, or the electric clutch is engaged, it kills the engine. Have replaced the relay due to it buzzing with no sucess, but not sure how to check the remaining switches to tell which one is bad. Have ohmed the wiring and found no broken wires and have a good ground. How do I go about testing the switches and pin pointing the problem?

ANSWER: Hello Steven:

The Seat Switch is Usually the Cause of this Prolem. Check the Seat Safety Switch. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHECKING THE SAFETY SWITCHES IS JUST THAT!!! FOR CHECKING ONLY. I NEVER Suggest a Mower be Operated with a Safety Device or Switch Disconnected or Bypassed. Now. On Some Model Mowers you can Simply Unplug the Safety Switch from the Harness. On Other Models you have to Place a Jumper Wire Between the Harness Terminals (on the 4 Post Switch Jumper from Same Color Wire to Same Color Wire). The Seat Safety is Showing No One is Seating in the Seat when the Clutch is Engaged. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: John
Used the jumper on the seat switch with no good results. Tied the brake switch down and the engine will run and the mower will go forward but as soon as the deck blade switch is pulled the engine will die.

Answer
Hello Again Steven:

There May be a Bad Wire in the Seat Harness. The Problem you Described is Due to the Seat Switch Not Making Proper Connection and the Safety System Does Not Show Anyone in the Seat when you Release the Brake/Clutch or Engage the Blades. Check the Harness for the Seat Switch and Ensure there is No Bare Wires that May be Grounding the System or A Broken Wire in the Harness from the Seat Switch. Please Remember; Some Safety Systems Require a Jumper and Others Do Not. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
