Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman (Tecumseh) 16hp OHV, carburetor problems, compression stroke

Question
This rider is about 30 years old. Recently this summer it would cut off just as if I turned the ignition off. Sometimes it will spit and sputter and then cut off.  It was very hot this summer and figured it was a vapor lock. If I let it set for about 30 minutes it was start but eventually the same cutting off.  It's cooler now and it is the same and guess it is not vapor locking.  I took the air filter off and when cranking I see gas blowing out of the carburetor and when it started it sucked it all back in.  Is it a valve sticking or carburetor problems.  Someone told me to take out the plug and spray PB Blaster in and see if it helps.  What do you think?

Answer
Hello Ronald:

If the Engine is Starting Normally and is Not Slowing or Stopping During Each Compression Stroke, then the Coil/Ign Module/Magnetron May be Breaking Down and Requires Replacing. If the Engine is Dragging or Slowing During the Starter Cycle, then the Valves Require Resetting. From your Description, it Sounds like the Coil/Ign Module/Magnetron is Bad. Operate the Engine Until it Quits and then Immediately Check for Fire at the Plug. If No Fire, the Replace the Coil/Ign Module/Magnetron. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
