Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): FWD of craftsman mower only half working, axles, pulley

Question
Hi Fred. I have a craftsman 22" FWD mower (#917.376673). Late in the summer I noticed that only the right front wheel is turning and not the left. What steps can I check to troubleshoot this situation. Thanks, Richard

Answer
Remove the belt cover that goes to the transmission.  Remove the belt.  Turn the input pulley and observe if both axles turn.  Inspect gears in the front wheels inspect the gears on the actual they should be in good condition and mesh well.  If you still haven't found your issue remove the gears from the actual and check the keys underneath them.  There is usually a screen under the key that allows the key to slip when pulling backwards.  If it's none of the then you have an internal transmission issue you'll have to take it apart identify the war and or broken parts and replace them or just replace the transmission.  When reassembling do not use too much grease where the axle gear meets the wheel gear.  Best of luck I hope this information is useful.
