Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn mower starts then quits, carberator, new spark

Question
QUESTION: John,
I have a Poulan mower with B&S engine (model-10A902 type-0439-Code97030775). It starts up fine but revs real fast and then dies out. I have been reading your response to similar problems. So I put a new carberator and new spark plug on the engine, cleaned the sponge air filter. It still does the same thing. Hope you can help

ANSWER: Hello Greg:

Will the Engine Idle or Does it Start and Rev Up Immediately and then Quit? Thanks.

John

QUESTION: It will start and rev up immediately and then quits. If I keep priming it, it will keep going but revs real high. Once I  stop priing it, it quits.

ANSWER: Hello Again Greg:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View.  1- To Reset the Governor; Loosen the Governor Arm Bolt and Turn the Governor Shaft Clockwise Until it Stops. Using the Governor Arm Hold the Carburetor to Full Throttle. Now with the Shaft Full Clockwise and the Governor Arm and Carburetor Held at Full Throttle, Tighten the Governor Arm Bolt. If the Engine Still Runs Full Throttle, then Reverse the Rotation of the Governor Shaft, but Still Hold the Carburetor at Full Throttle with the Governor Arm. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor. 2- Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: HI John,

I put a new carburator on the mower, and went to the sight you sight to view the breakdown of the engine. I did not find a governor shaft or bolt. I don't believe my engine has those components. My manual says there is no adjustment for the governor on this engine
Could it be the magneto needs to be replaced? Thank you

Greg

Answer
Hi Greg:

I Appoligize. This Engine has the Air Vane Governor. Select the Cylinder, Cylinder Head, Gasket Set-Engine, Gasket Set-Valves, Lubrication File. The Governor on this Mower is #200 in this Breakdown. The Governor Link is Shown in the Air Cleaner, Controls, Governor Spring, Ignition File. It is #201 in the Breakdown. The Carburetor is Attached to the Governor Link as the Carburetor is Being Installed. The Governor Spring Attaches to the Large Loop in the Link and the Other End of the Spring Attaches to the Pivot on the Throttle Bracket. Most Times with this Type of Govrnor, People FOrget to Hook the Governor Link to the Cauburetor when they Install the Carburetor Onto the Engine. Make Sure the Throttle Moves the Carburetor Throttle Shaft Freely and is Not Binding. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
