Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Slow moving blades, spindle bearings, spindle assembly

Question
I have a LTX1842 mower (Troy Bilt) and when I engage the PTO the blades slowly speed up.  I can't cut grass on any setting execpt in the highest setting.  Sometimes I can hear a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the spindles.  If I replace the spindles would that fix my problem?

Answer
Hello Clarence:

If the Belt is Good and Not Slipping, then Check the Spindles for Bad Bearings. The Rattle you are Talking About is Usually a Sign of Bad Bearings. Check ALL the Pulleys and Idlers for Bad Bearings. Replace ANY Idler Pulley that has a Rough or Grinding Noise when they are Turned. Remove the Deck and Turn the Spindles by Hand. Do they have a Rough or Grinding Sound to them? If Yes, then Replace the Bad Spindle Assembly or Replace the Bad Spindle Bearings. On Some of these Spindles you can Replace the Bad Bearings. The Spindle Assemble (Part # 618-0574) Usually Cost Between $99.00us and $130.00us Each. Go to this Site Addy, http://www.jackssmallengines.net/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab and Enter the OEM (Troy Bilt)and the Model Numbers. Now Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. You can Purchase the Spindle from Outdoor Distributors @ 1-877-707-2787. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
