Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): OHV engine craftsman riding mower, craftsman riding mower, blade type

Question
I need to know more information on a question asked earlier. The questions are..Do I remove the valve cover of the left and right side or both of the OHV engine on the riding mower (craftsman)? Next, need to understand if I need to loosen all four of the adjustor locks? And which is the intake valve? And which is the exhaust? And how to set the clearance is it 0.004 0r 0.006? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Again Lisa:

You Set the Valves One Cylinder at a Time. Set the Cylinder you are Setting so the Piston is at TDC. On Some Models you can Put a Pencil in the Spark Plug Hole and Slowly Turn the Engine Until the Pencil Stops Traveling Out of the Plug Hole. If Both Rocker Arms Have Movement, then this Cylinder is at TDC. Release the Adjuster Locks and Using a Blade Type Feeler Gauge, Set the Clearance Between the Rocker Arm and the Valve Stem Top to the Required Gap. The Exhaust Valve is Usually on the Bottom and is Discolored to a Rusty Brown Color. On Some Model Engines the Exhaust Valve is Smaller than the Intake Valve. The Clearance .004in - .006in Means you Use the .005in Blade and then Adjust the Rocker Arm so the Feeler Gauge Blade Slides Snug Between the Rocker Arm and the Valve Stem Top. Any Valve Clearance Values are Usually Listed this Way. Once this Cylinder is Adjusted, then Set the Other Cylinder to TDC and then Set the Clearance for that Cylinder. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
