Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs OHV 17, crankcase pressure, crankcase breather

Question
2000 Briggs 17hp Intec single on Troy built tractor.Only 140hrs runtime on engine, never overheated or run low on oil.Runs well, but smokes badly(oil smoke)after warmup, getting worse as time passes.Once warm if returned to idle, smokes massively.Someone told me there was a crancase vent issue with these engines???

Answer
Hello Joe:

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was Located in the Question Pool. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Clean the Crankcase Breather or Replace as Required. I have Not Heard of an Issue with the Crankcase Breathers, but it is Possible. The Biggest Complaint I Hear About is the Head Gaskets and the Valve Clearance on All the OHV Engines. If the Crankcase Vent is Clear, then Check the Head Bolts. The Smokes Badly After Warm Up May mean the Head Bolts are Loose and Allowing the Head Gasket to Leak Into the Valve Stem Chamber and this Increases the Crankcase Pressure. The Increase in Crankcase Pressure Pushes Oil Into the Crankcase Breather and this is Sucked Into the Carburetor Throat and then Into the Cylinder where it is Burnt with the Gas and Causes the Smoke. Usually if the Head Gasket is Blown it will Smoke within 2 to 3 Minutes After Starting the Engine. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
