Answer
Hello John:

Your Problem of Gas in the Crankcase is a Common Problem. In this Instance the Engine Not Staying Running is Most Likely Due to the Same Thing. 1-  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. 2- Install a Manual Cut Off Valve in the Gas Line to the Carburetor and Manually Turn Off the Gas Flow to the Carburetor when the Engine is Not in Use. The Carburetor Needle Valve is Not Seating Properly and Allowing Gas to Leak By and Flood the Carburetor and Cylinder. The the Gas Seeps by the Rings and into the Crankcase and Contaminates the Crankcase Oil. Cleaning and Rebuilding the Carburetor will Correct this Problem for a Few Months and then it will Start Again. The Manual Cut Off Valve has been the Only Sure Cure I have Found to Work since this Continuing Problem has Shown Itself. All the Manufacturers are having this Problem. Some Carburetor have an Electric Solenoid in the Carburetor Bowl to Prevent this. The Solenoids are Giving Problems also. If the Engine is a Briggs and Stratton; You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If the Engine is a Tecumseh; I have 2 PDF Site Addys that May Assist you Also. They are; 1- http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf and 2- http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
