Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ariens rider, insect fogger, crankcase oil

Question
I have a '97 Ariens Sierra model 1440H tractor mower. It has an electric blade control switch. I pull the switch, and the blades  s l o w l y  start and finally run, but the blades will only run when the mower deck is in the highest position. As soon as I lower the deck to cut, the blades shut off. Also, the B&S 14HP OHV model #2ep777 engine is blowing oil through the carb and light blue (almost white) smoke FOGS out of the exhaust (I could probably rent it out as an insect fogger). Is it rings, head gasket, bad valves??? Thanks for any help. Bob

Answer
Hello Bob:

1- Check the Crankcase Oil for Being Over Filled and Gas Contamination. That will be the Cause for the Blowing Oil and White Smoke. If the Gas has Contaminated the Oil, then Drain and Refill with Fresh Oil. Install a Manual Cut Off Valve in the Gas Supply Line to the Carburetor and Manually Turn Off the Gas when the Engine is Not in Use. I have Tried Many Different Ways to Stop the Crankcase Oil from Becoming Contaminated and the Manual Cut Off is the ONLY SURE WAY. 2- Locate the PTO Ground and Clean it and Ensure the PTO is Grounding Properly. If the Ground is Good and Clean, then a New PTO May be Required. However, from your Description, it Sounds like a Bad Ground. This is a Common Problem. You can View a Breakdown of the Mower at this Site Addy; http://www.jackssmallengines.net/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. The Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Ariens) and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
