Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B/S 8HP lawn tractor - will not start, briggs and stratton, mechanical points

Question
QUESTION: Eric,

I have a 1976 Simplicity 5008 Lawn Tractor with a Briggs and Stratton 8HP engine (model #190707) that will not start.  The battery holds a charge and the starter motor will turn the flywheel 1 to 2 times each time I try to start it but I am not getting any spark from my spark plug.  I have changed plugs but still no spark.  Could this be the magneto?  I believe if it were the safety points I would not even get the starter to run correct?  Any input on trouble shooting this further would be very helpful.  Thanks.

Scott

ANSWER: Have you check the points and condensor?  You need some special tools to remove the flywheel to access the points.  An alternate solution is to install an electronic ignition module.  You can purchase the electronic ignition kits at most auto parts stores and mower shops.  I would recommend this solution becasue it does require any special tools.
Let me know if this helps.

QUESTION: Hi Eric,

Sorry I didn't mention this before but the original owner of the tractor installed a magnatron electronic ignition to replace the mechanical points.  Is there a way to trouble shoot this item or is it inexpensive enough to go ahead and just replace it?

Scott

Answer
The best method to check the ignition modele is to dis-connect the shut-off ground with connected to the magnatron module.  There should be one small wire connected to the coil.  Dis-connect and check for spark.  If you have a magnatron kit, you can tell by looking at the coil, there will be a clear colored add-on part to the coil.  Usually the wires are soldered but you can still isolate the coil by follown the small wire from the coil to the terminal block on the engine block, usually located near the throttle connetion.  Dis-connect the wire at the terminal block and check for spark.
Let me know what you find.
