Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Electric Clutch?, craftsman lawn tractor, electric clutch

Question
Was given a 1980’something Craftsman lawn tractor. Everything is rough but working.
But…
When the switch is turned on for the electric clutch to engage the mowing deck the amp gauge moves all the way to negative charge.
Was told by the previous owner it would eventually kill the battery. (I don’t see why it wont)
The present mechanic, my 15 year old son is having a great time working on it but this problem is out of my league. The tiller, plow and wagon will be a great help with the garden but a teenager wants it all perfect (no matter what it looks like). Any help will be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Jeff:

If the Stator (Charger) is Charging Any at All, then the Stator Needs to be Replaced with a Larger Output Stator or the Regulator needs to be Replaced. Some of the Earlier Engines Did Not have the Higher Amp Stator for Electric PTOs and the Owner Usually had the Lower Output Stators Replaced with the Higher Output Ones. Check the Ground Wire for the PTO. The Grounds on the PTOs Give the Most Problems. As the Breakdown Shows, there May be a Voltage Regulator. This May Also be Bad. The 16 Amp Stator is Best for the Electric PTOs and will Replace the Lower Amp Stators without Modification. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
