Mercedes: Buying an older Merceds -- Good idea?, diesel mercedes, model mercedes

Question
Hi,

I am in the midst of trying to finalize a decision about whether or not to trade/sell my 1999 Passat for an older Mercedes.  I just have a desire for a car with more style than what I have now, and it wouldn't be bad to have a cheaper car.  So my question to you -- what would be your recommendation for a very reliable model mercedes that can be purchased for a market price of $5K or under? While I realize that reliability often depends on the previous owner's maintenance and upkeep, I was wondering if you could just give me a "ballpark" type answer (i.e. "stay away from this model", or "this model has always proven reliable") My initial preference would be for a diesel engine.

Thanks alot,
Justin
