Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Mower will not start (No Compression), throttle lever, brake cable

Question
QUESTION: Hi John

I have a Craftsman rear drive lawn mower 6.75 Hi-Torque Eagle-1.  Model number 143.986710.  My problem is that when I pull the throttle lever, there is no compression.  If I do not pull the throttle lever, it has compression.  I checked the oil level and it is fine.  Any suggestions.
Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Shawn:

Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers in the Upper Left Search Box and Click Go. Then Visually Verify the Equipment and CLick Continue. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. Using you Mower Model Numbers and the Engine Model Numbers can you Locate the Lever you are Talking About and Give me the Diagram Number or a Reference Number, Please. The Only Lever that Should Effect the Engine in the Manner you Described is the Engine Stop/Brake Lever. Thanks.

QUESTION: Hi John

I check and could not find the connection that I was talking about.  I also checked the model number of the lawn mower and it is 944.368340.  What I am trying to explain is that on the handle, there are two levers.  One is to make the lawn mower go ahead and the other you have to hold in to make the mower start.  This lever is hooked up to a cable that goes down near the primer.  That is the lever that I am trying to find on the parts list.  Could not.

Thanks
Shawn
ANSWER: Hello Again Shawn:

The Lever you are Asking About is the Engine Stop/Brake Cable. If you Do Not Hold it Tight to the Handle Bar the Engine Stop Switch and Brake are Engaged and the Engine Will Feel Like it has Compression because of the Brake Band Rubbing on the Flywheel. Tie the Engine Brake Cable (the handle you pull to start and run the engine) to the Handle Bar. Now Remove the Spark Plug and Move the Coil Wire to a Place Where it Will Not Shock you When you Turn the Engine. Place your Finger Over the Plug Hole and Turn the Engine. Does Your Finger Get Blown Off the Plug Hole? If No, then the Connecting Rod in the Engine Has Broken and the Piston is Not Moving in the Cylinder. If your Finger is Blown Off the Plug Hole, then Remove the Cylinder Head and Check for a Stuck Valve. Is the Blade Turning when you Turn the Engine? If No, then Check the Flywheel Key. If the Flywheel Key is Sheared, it May be Spinning on the Crankshaft and Not Turning the Piston in the Engine or the Crankshaft. Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers 143.986710 in the Upper Left Search Box and Click Go. Then Visually Verify the Equipment and CLick Continue. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Hi John

Just wanted to let you know that I took my lawnmower to a shop and after opening it up, the nut that holds the flywheel was off and all the threads were gone except for about 2 or 3 rows in the middle.  That is what was causing the problem.  I guess that is has not been since yesterday.
Thanks for all your help.  Great site.
