Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda GCV160 crankshaft main seal, pilot bearing puller, crank shaft

Question
QUESTION: I have a leaking main shaft seal on a Honda GCV160 (vertical shaft 5.5hp) Can I remove & replace without pulling motor & oil pan? I have clear outside access from under deck. Is it safe to use slide hammer to pull seal out?

ANSWER: Hello Dave:

You are on the Right Track. I Used a Slide Hammer to Remove the Upper and Lower Crankshaft Seals Until I Purchased a Seal Puller. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram and Select the Catalog American Honda. Then Select Engine. Then Scroll Down to your Model and Select it. Then Select the File for the Oil Pan. The Lower Seal is Breakdown # 19. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: My Honda project went well using the slide hammer & screw to pull the main seal taking care not to mar the housing or shaft. I have a K-D seal puller but don't see how the seal puller can get into that space without chancing damage to the crank shaft. Is your seal puller a hook type - lever arm? Please explain or provide a link to the propper seal puller. Thanks, Dave

Answer
Hello Again Dave:

My Seal Puller is a Pilot Bearing Puller that I Modified to Pull the Small Engine Seals. Over the Years I have Manufactured 4 Different Length Arms. The Different Length Arm Allows me to Pull Seals from All of the Small Engine I have Encountered. You can Check with Jacks Small Engine (http://www.jackssmallengines.com/index.html). They have a Great Selection of Tools. Thats where One of the Shop Mechanics has been Getting their Tools from. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
