Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler 17HP, lt2000, fuel gas

Question
I have a Crafstman LT2000 with a Kohler 17HP (model#917.27315).  Yesterday, about halfway through my mowing it started having trouble when going uphill.  It would lose power in consistent short intervals feeling like it was surging back and forth.  It happens only when going uphill and not losing any RPMs but feeling more like a drivetrain issue.  As it's a 3 hour round trip to get a new drive belt and not knowing if that's the issue I was hoping you could help me.

Answer
The model number you gave me doesn't have enough digits to get a hit at Sears.

In general, what you describe is probably not a belt.  A bad belt usually isn't jerky, more of a smooth slip.

If you have a gear drive trans you need shift keys.  If you have a hydrostat your done.

Bottom line, the 3 hour trip will cost 300.00 minimum.  If it's a hydro, 600.00.  Save your gas, sorry, I mean fuel.  Gas is what my dad gets when he eats a burrito.  A LT2000 is way to old to spend this kind of money on.
