Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): fuel problem, vacuum gauge, briggs stratton

Question
QUESTION: I am working on briggs&stratton motor.it has impulse fuel pump mounted on carburetor.i rebuilt pump twice.put kit in carb.replaced fuel line.i can prime and engine starts.when engine turns over i can feel vacuum in line to block.fuel line has gas to pump but no gas to carburetor.any way of testing vacuum line.or can some engine problem cause no pulse.engine is 402707 16 hp.

ANSWER: Do you have a vacuum meter?  Is so check the vacuum coming from the engine hose.

Did you find 2 small springs in the fuel pump?  What is the type number of the engine?
Let me know.

QUESTION: hi eric
I don't hace a vacuum gauge but i will get one. What should the vacuum reading be.the engine type 1228-01 engine#402707.Yes the two small springs are in fuel pump and put in correctly.fuel hoae is to lower right bottom and vacuum impulse line is to upper left side.
thanks for reply

ANSWER: One problem with the smaller engines is low vacuum.  How does this impact you?  Well, Briggs rarely provides vacuum readings for their engines.

However, I would connect a vacuum gauge, Mity Vac tool, to the fuel pump pulse line to see if there is pressure and vacuum.

Two things you may want to check before buying the tool is the dipstick o-rings and the valve breater.  Some Briggs engines have historically had sealing probles with the top o-ring on the dipstick.  This can cause the engine not to produce the pulse for the fuel pump.

Secondly, the valve breather can stick and cause the same problem.  Typically you can rattle the valve breather and hear it rattle like a baby rattle.  You may want to remove and clean the valve breather by spraying parts cleaner through the breather assembly and then dry with compressed air from an air compressor.

The breather can be identified by following the breather tube from the lower carburetor air filter housing.
Let me know if either of these tips solves your problem.

QUESTION: Hi eric I now have a MIghty mite vacuum meter and a briggs book on the way for this engine.i checked the vacuum on line and it was about 5.ipulled a vacuum on pump(vacuum line)to see if gas would be pulled into carb.no gas i found breather on side of engine.i took off top screw and when i took off bottom oil started leaking out.i will take off tomorrow.when i blow air in breather tube it comes out vacuum line to pump.also did compression test on plugs.100 on one and 125 on the other.I sure hate to keep bugging you.you have been a tremendous help.thank you very much.

Answer
The engine compression is pretty decent...the book says to ensure the compression is 10% of each other...it's pretty close.

Spray some Brakleen through the breater to clean it then dry with compressed air.  If oil leaked out it was probably sticking.

Those breathers are also pretty cheap and most shops stock them.  I believe they are less than $10.00.
Let me know if cleaning the breather solves the problem.
