Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cub Cadet with 18.5 B&S engine., back fire, loud bang

Question
The engine gives off a loud bang on shut down.  The present cure is to apply full throttle with shutdown and leave in that position until completely stopped.
What can I do to remedy this situation?

Answer
Nothing! Briggs calls this problem "AFTER-BANG"!!!
This is the way this engine is designed.  The carb has a fuel shutoff solenoid  to prevent "after bang".  That's what's really happening.  Not a back fire.  What happens is when you shut the engine off, the only thing you shut off is the ignition.   All the while your engine is still spinning. As long as the engine spins it draws in fuel. Since you have no ignition to ignite this fuel it doesn't burn.  Since the engine is still moving the fuel is forced into the muffler. It sits there quitely waiting. Waiting ,waiting, waiting ,until, you are about to get off of the seat,... and BANG!!!!. That's "after bang".

It happens because as the liquid fuel evaporates in the "hot" muffler, it reaches it's flash point inside the "Hot" muffler, and ignites. BANG! No wait, I mean "AFTER-BANG"

The solution, shut the engine off at full throttle. It's the way it's made.
