Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Onan pulsing, pilot jet, float chamber

Question
I have a John Deere with a 20 hp Onan performer engine that pulses when it is running not under load.  If you put it under load it does not pulse and works well.  Any ideas.
thanks

Answer
This is the story of my life, surging Onans are common.
The problem is with the pilot jet.
Remove the top of the carb and you will see a jet going down into the float/body area of the carb. Pull this jet out and clean it thoroughly.
remove the float and clean the entire float chamber while you are there. You will be shocked at the amount of crap in the bottom of the carb.
This carb is really easy to clean. You can clean it thoroughly without even removing it. Pull the 4 screws out of the top and you can get to everything.
Be warned. Do not use compressed air on any of the carb passages. There are 2 welch plugs that will blow out and the only way to get them is in a 50.00 carb kit.
