Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 240 stalling when warm, battery ignition, problem thanks

Question
I have a 240 that when warm will quit. If i let it cool  it will run fine for 5 minutes then quit again. I tried putting wet cool rag on the small square epoxy backed part, ignitor??. It seems that when it is cool it will start. What function does this part play? Does this sound like it could be the problem?
Thanks

Answer
The ignitor does the same thing as points and condenser in a battery ignition system. The ignitor is what makes 14.5 hp Kawasaki run like a 25HP Briggs. Unfortunately it sounds like your problem could be either a coil problem, or, an ignitor problem. The manual says to test your ignitor by installing a "known good unit". Unfortunately you probably don't have a spare ignitor laying around the house.

All I can tell you for sure is that my dealership stocks 8 ignitors and only 1 coil.

If you have to guess, guess ignitor.
