Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 102 cub cadet/k241as kohler engine, starter generator, cub cadet

I just got this older mower given to me. It is a 102 cub with a K241AS engine. I replaced the coil when I got it (no spark), it ran fine for a short-while,(I ran it for 20 min or so and my son ran it for 30 min the next day. He came back 1 hour later and it would not start). I lost spark again. I checked the points, wire continuity and voltage to the coil and the black box on the front of the mower( I assume this it a voltage regulator from the starter generator?) Everything seemed fine so I replaced the coil again, still no spark! The friend who gave this mower never had this problem. What am I missing??
