Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Same Sears Mower Same Problem, joseph c, sears

Question
Hey Eric:

I emailed you three days ago and I did Ignition Test and got no spark, replaced the ignition modulator and still no spark.  The Model number of this sears unit is 917.378461 and the Briggs motor number is 123K07-0184-E1.  Any ideas on this one.  I hate to bother you, but I really need the help on this one.

Cheers and Thanks

Answer
On the ignition module you should have had one small wire.  Dis-connect the wire, reinstal the starter shroud and check for spark and you should have spark.
The only possible cause if you have no spark with the small wire dis-connected from the ignition coil is a bad coil itself.  How are you checking for spark?
Additionally, the only other parts in the ignition system is the wire from the coil to the shut-off switch, the mechanal part that holds the shut-off switch allowing the shut-off cable mount.  Look on the shut-off/brake assembly and see if the shut-off cable is moving the switch far enough to open the switch.  To find the shut-off switch just follow the shut-off cable from the handle lever.

Sometimes the cables strecth just a little causing the shut-off switch not to open the circuit.

Does the electric start still work?
Let me know.
Eric
