Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 313777 B&S Motor rpm, briggs and straton, max rpms

Question
Hello,
I was wondering if you could give me the idling, and the max rpms of a model 313777 Briggs and Straton Motor. I have taken it out of my tractor and plan to use it in my go-kart, but need to know its rpms to buy a suitable clutch.
Thanks,
Bill

Answer
This is a question I probably shouldn't answer but here goes.
Every 4 stroke small engine has the same specs.
3800 no load top speed and about 1000 idle speed.
These specs were developed 75 years ago when Homelite built the first portable generator.
3600 RPM equalls 60cycles in a generator. That's what all of the US elecrtical devices from TVs to toasters use.
The reason I shouldn't answer is that Briggs strongly discourages this engine in a go-kart.
The problem is this engine lacks the nessacary linkage to return to throttle to idle when the gas pedal is released.
Be sure to have a bullet proof return mechanism in place.
