Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Riding Mower losing power, hydrostatic transmission, grandads

Question
DYT400..B&S 25 HP INTEK TWIN OHC.  After mowing for about 1/2 hour the mower tends to lose forward motion power, almost as though it is running out of gas.  If I stop and let it cool, it's ok for another 1/2 hour.  Believe it is overheating..symptoms rapidly appear when going up a small grade.  Please help!!

Answer
I don't have good news David.
I'm assuming by your question that the engine sounds OK
Does this tractor have a hydrostatic transmission? Thought so.
You have a transmission that is probably done.
Unfortunately for a Craftsman tractor this is like your car driving of a cliff. You can fix it if you're willing to spend the money, but, it won't be worth it.
Hydrostatic failures are very rare but defiantly occur.
When you buy your new tractor buy a hydrostatic tractor.
Don't go to Sears!!!!!! Everything they have you can get at Depot or Lowe's for less money.
Better yet buy a Deere, the X304 model was rated the best by "Consumer Reports" magazine. It will cost you 3,000.00+ but you will hand it down to your grandads. Remember, you get what you pay for.
