Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): deck maintenance (Craftsman 917.271061), craftsman 917, deck maintenance

Question
Getting my mower ready for spring and I feel a little play in the bearing at the bottom of the spindles holding the blade.  Is that normal?  If not, should I replace the whole spindle, or is it not too much of a job to take it apart and replace just the bearing?  Thanks for your advice!

Answer
 Hello Gary:

There Should be NO PLAY in the Bearings. If the Spindle Moves Side to Side, Up and Down, Rattles or Grinds when the Pulley is Turned, then Remove the Mandrel(Spindle) and Either Replace or Repair it. If the Housing Is Not Worn and a New Bearing will Still Seat, then Rebuild the Mandrel. I do All the Time and have Had No Problems. If Rebuilt Properly, the Mandrel should Last 3 to 5 Years or Longer. Go to this Addy http://www3.sears.com/ and Select the Lawn and Garden Box. Enter the Model Numbers and Click Continue. Verify the Mower and Click Continue. From this Page you can See Breakdowns or go to the IPL. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Thanks.

 Good Luck
