Thanks for responding.  The engine seems to run good. Ive only had it a few months so I dont know if it is running worse than it used to. The oil was recently chnged and is 30 weight oil and does not smell like gas.It uses so much oil that it is always new. Thanks.

Hi.  I have a OH180 techumseh engine.  The compression is 85 Psi and it runs good but has excessive blowby coming from the breather. It will loose about 1-2 Qts in a half hour of running. The spark plug looks good[not oil fouled],no major oil leaks, and doesnt smoke from the exhaust. Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks

What weight of oil are you using?  Does your engine have dipstick tube?

How does the engine run?  Does the oil smell like gas? Have you recently changed the oil.
Let me know.

Do you have access to a cylinder leak down tester?  Is there a dipstick on the engine?
Let me know.

Answer
DON'T tear it apart yet!  Check the easy items first!

The engine needs a vacuum to keep the oil from getting past the rings.  The vacuum is maintained by a crankcase breather that lets air out when the piston is on the down stroke.  The breather contains a one way valve to let the pressure out but seals when outside or atmospheric air pressure tries to enter.  If the valve is not working correctly you will burn oil.

Another cause of an air leak can come from a leaky gasket or more commonly an o-ring on the oil fill dip spick.

You should be able to identify you breather location with this information.
Finally, how oil is the engine and how many hours is on the engine...rough estimate will do.
Let me know.
