Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray riding mower 30571 72A, briggs and stratton, briggs stratton

Question
Hi guys, Hope you can help me with this tecnical one. I recently inherited a murray riding mower with a 10.5 HP briggs&stratton motor on it. Only trouble is it had been on fire breifly at some stage and i suspect the diode to the alternator is fried as their is current leakage from the batt to earth via the alt coils henc to earth.  Can i replace the diode with an after market product to stop the battery draining.  If so what sort? This would be cheaper than replacing the whole alternator and its lead.

Answer
You can order diodes through your local Briggs and Stratton dealer.  You can find the part number online from the Briggs website.  You will need your engine model and type number to use the illustrated parts list.

Send me you engine and model number if you have trouble finding the part number.
