Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh H50-65448M Ser0297D, compression gauge, div 5

Question
Can't find the carb make anywhere but it may be moot.

I borrowed a spark checker from a friend and the engine has a strong spark; that is it jumps the "std gap" with a strong spark once or twice when I pull the cord.

The compression only went to about 40 lbs and this was after about 6 pulls on the cord.  After a couple of squirts of oil it may have gone up to 40-45 with another half dozen pulls.

It seems like the rings must be shot.  Is it worth replacing them or should I just replace the engine for a price of $175-$250 depending on what I get.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
Brian

-----Question-----
John,
Thanks for your very quick response to my question.  The engine doesn't burn much oil.  The level hasn't changed in the 8 hours I ran it at full throttle.  Once I noticed wisps of white smoke coming from underneath the engine when I idled it but couldn't locate where it is coming from.

I will try to borrow a compression gauge and check compression. What would make the compression increase to over 90 psi?

I went to the sites you referred me to and printed out the parts list and pictures but there is no detail for the carb or a kit to rebuilt it.  It gave a reference to Div 5, Sec A, page 176 "for a breakdown.  Do you have any ideas how I can access that?  Also, where can I order a rebuilding kit for it.  This site offers the complete carb but not kit.

Thanks again,
Brian

-----Question-----
I borrowed this Heathkit Log Splitter from a friend who told me it is hard starting.  Even with starter fluid it takes 15-25 pulls.  Once started it runs fine and I used it several days for a total of about 8hours of work.

I'd like to return it to him in better shape than I got it and wondered if you had any ideas about the problem.  I put a new spark plug in and that didn't seem to make any difference.

When I pull the starter cord it fires once or twice and I get a grayish/white puff out of the muffler but I get warn out pulling it so many times.  I tried squirting a little oil in the cylinder thinking that if the rings were bad perhaps that would improve the compression enough to get it started but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

What should the compression be on this engine?  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

-----Answer-----
 Hello Brian:

What is the Oil Consumption on this Engine? The Compression Should be 70psi to Run. They Become Hard to Start at 90psi. If the Compression is Over 90psi, then Remove and Disassemble the Carburetor (you don't have to Remove the Welsh Plugs) and Soak it Overnight in Carburetor Cleaning Solution (I Use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Kit. You can View a Breakdown/IPl of the Engine at this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers. Then Select the File to Download. This Addy http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf will Give you More Technical Advice Also for this Engine. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

 Hello Brian:

What is the OEM on the Carburetor? Tilotson? Send me the Carburetor OEM and I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL for you. The Compression will Incresae if a Small Amount of Oil is Leaking by the Rings and Helps the Rings Seal Better. That was Why I asked about the Oil Consumption and the Compression. The gray/white Smoke was another Reason. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks. Be Safe.

Answer
 Hello Brian:

Check the Valve Lash. If the Valve Lash has Closed Up, it will cause a Loss of Compression. When Checking the Valve Lash you can Check the Head Gasket also. I have Re-Read our E-Mails and saw where I Failed to Mention this Earlier. You would be Better Off Purchasing a New Engine. You have a Warranty with the New Engine. Hope this Helps.
