Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan 446T Pro, starter rope, rope tie

Question
Eric you were right on about the torx screw being in the center of the shaft. I was able to remove the top half the clutch which was the free wheeling part. the bottom part, mechanical (pall) showers a counter clockwise arrow for removal. It is the shape of a violin with what appears to be one half round slot on either side of the middle. It appears to be for a special tool. The ideal tool would be two 1/8 inch tines 1/2 inch apart adaptable to a ratchet wrench. Any recommendations? You have gotten me allot further than I was and I appreciate it.

Answer
I'm sure Poulan sells a special tool to remove the clutch but some creativity usually works.

First, to hold the piston in place remove the spark plug.  Next get some string, we usually use starter rope.  Tie several knots in the string and insert the knots in the spark plug hole.  Make sure you leave plenty of string outside the spark plug hole so you can remove the string.  As you remove the clutch the knots prevent the piston from fully rotating.  The piston pushes the knots to the top of the cylinder and eventually will stop when it hits the knots.

You can grind an old socket or use a wood block with a couple of drill bits, steel pins or small bolts inserted in the wood to make a tool to remove the clutch.  Just be sure not to damage the clutch during removal.

Can you send a picture of the clutch?  I may be able to provide a better response if I saw the clutch.
