Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): exhaust turns red, happy thanksgiving, exhaust valve

Question
My father Briggs would not start, called dealer, said ohv valves needed adjusted. Set intake on .004, exhaust on .006 just like the manual says. Now it starts but the exhaust turns cherry red. I'm afraid it will catch fire. My lawnmower don't do this. Any suggestions? It is a 16.5 hp with ohv Briggs & Sratton. Thanks, David

Answer
 Hello David:

Check the Muffler for Blockage. If the Muffler is Clear then, Set the Exhaust Valve to .009in. Usually the .006 Setting is Too Close and Causes this Problem. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Hello Again David:

Thankyou David for he Feedback in the Rating and Comments Area. I Try to Answer as Many as I can and Find a few that I Feel I should Use (in a Fashion) to Say Thanks to All who Assist me in Learning how to Better Explain a Procedure. Most of the Repairs are Mechaincal to me and I Forget to Include Items that I Naturaly Look for. When Setting the Valves you Should Turn the Engine a Few Time and Watch the Movement of the Valve Stem. You can Usually See if a Valve is Sticking or Frozen. I am Sorry for Not Instructing you to Look for this and I Thank You Very Much for The Reminder. We at All Experts are I hope All Wanting as Much Input as Possible. Thanks Again. Till Next Time. May all your Mechanical Problems be SMALL ONES and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours.

 Best Wishes and Good Luck

PS  Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas Also. Be Safe. John
