Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Riding Mower Engine Troubles, blown headgasket, carburator

Question
John,

Thanks for your response.
I do not have all the information for the engine handy. I do know it is a Kawasaki 17hp fc540v SOH engine. As far as the code numbers go, If this is necessary for a follow up answer I will get it and send it along later today.

I believe this engine was specifically built for JD as I am finding it almost impossible to find parts (even through Kawasaki directly). So far everything has had to be ordered through JD.

Best Regards,

Bob

Question -
I have a JD model 265 lawn tractor. It has a 17hp kawasaki SOH engine and has been running fine. The other day while using it, I heard a small 'pop' and then the engine began to sputter and die. It started quickly back up and as long as the choke stays fully engaged it runs 'sputter free'. Could this be something as simple as adjustment to the carburator or something more critical like piston issues?

Thanks,

Bob

Answer -
 Hello Bob:

Check the Compression. It Sounds like the Headgasket May have Blown. With a Blown Headgasket the Engine Cant Pull the Gas through the Main Jet of the Carburator and is Pulling it through the Choke Port Instead. Send me the Model Numbers Off of the Engine, Please. With these Numbers I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
