Nissan Repair: Brake Rotor Grooves on New Rotors, brake rotor, disk brakes

Question
Hi,
I have a 97 Maxima.  I decided to replace my front disk brakes myself, for the first time.  I bought new rotors too.  Shortly after installing, the rotors developed grooves. Both sides of the car are about the same.  The brakes work very well and much better than when I had it done at Midas. I bought the best pads/rotors I could find, but they are not Nissan.  The pads/rotors are duramax.  did I do something wrong?  It is a problem?  A local garage said they were "pad slapped" (meaning that the rotors were not machined).  But the rotors were new.

Answer
Hi John -

Normally the factory rotors are machined already when you buy them. Sometimes mechanics "skim: them just to be sure they are true. If you don't have pulsating problems, then you should be fine.

What kind of pads did you install? A long time ago, all pads were asbestos fiber. Now they have metallic, semi metallic, and ceramic and they should be matched to the factory specs (rotor to pads). Sometimes the harder ones dig into the rotor a bit, but should not be much. Are the grooves deep?

Let me know -
aloha
