Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 8 HP rebuild, briggs and stratton, feeler gauge

Question
Hi John, I lapped the valves and set the gaps as you suggested. Once the motor was back together, it started on the first pull. It sounds great. What a huge relief. I was going to have to bring it to the shop in a basket after having failed at trying to save a little money. John you really saved me. Thanks so much for my help specifically and for volunteering your time to all who need your service and expertise. Sincerely Mike

Followup To

Question -
Hi John, Thanks for your response. I could not ask a follow-up last night because you were "maxed out" but thanks so much for your accurate and quick reply. No, I did not lap the valves. I know how to do that and will today. On your other question, "did you set the valve lash?". No, I did not and do not know how to. I know how to set the valve gap in an OHV car engine. Is it similar? I assume that I set the valve gap with a feeler gauge between the cam and the lifter (or is it a push rod) but I don't know about specs or how to set the motor position in preparation for setting the lash. Thanks again. Mike

 Hello Mike:

Go to this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Click on the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Dont have Part Numbers. Now Scroll Down to File #19 and Click. Then Scroll Down to the File # 196400 and Click. This will Download a Breakdown/IPl of this Engine. The Valves are on Page 2 of 16. The Valve Stem Must be Filed Down Until the Required gap is Optained for the Valve Lash. The Setting for this Engine are: .008 - .010in Intake Valve and .012 - .014in Exhaust Valve. I Use my Thumb to Hold the Valve Seated when Checking the Clearance Between the Stem and the Tappet. Set the Engine to TDC when Setting the Valve Lash. Set the Valve Lash and then Lap in the Valves. Then Reset the Valve Lash to Proper Clearance After the Valves have been Lapped. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
