Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 4.5HP No Spark, craftsman model, walk behind mower

Question
Mr. Bennett,

I'm trying to repair this 20" walk-behind mower for a relative.  Craftsman
model# 917387130, engine model# 143974500.  Mower hadn't run in two years, was
all gummed up.  I have cleaned & flushed thoroughly, replaced fluids, spark plug
& air filter.  Now I have no spark.  When I received mower, it did spark and I
was able to get it started for about 10 seconds.

Only "event" since I've had it was that it fell off a 2X4 I was using
to prop up so I could hose down deck.  Where should I start?  I can't find parts
(i.e. ignition module) because Craftsmn site doesn't XREF to B&S engine model
numbers.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Answer
Well Mike the first thing I check on these mowers is the stop cable. It often stretches and doesn't completely disengage from the kill switch. Pull up on the cable a little when your holding the bail and have a buddy see if you get spark then. If you still don't the coil is probably bad. It is Tecumseh engine and the part number for the coil is 34443A. GOOD LUCK
