Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs and stratton, craftsman lawn tractor, stator coil

Question
Hello, I am having a problem with my Craftsman lawn tractor, 21hp twin Briggs and Stratton, #407777. The stator coil is overheating, to the point of smoking, while the engine is running. I recently replaced the battery with a slightly smaller one, by mistake, the original being 275 cca the new 235cca BUT 275 cranking amps, deceiving labeling. Could the smaller battery be the problem? I removed the flywheel and the stator is burned, severely on the rear windings.

Thanks for the advice.

Answer
 Hello Tom:

Its Unusal for a Battery being Smaller CCA to cause this Problem. I would think that the Stator was Overworked by the Old Battery. Replace the Stator and your Problem should be Solved. The Old Battery May have Drawn to Heavily on the Stator and Caused the Problem you are now having. Be Sure to Inspect the Wires Carefully for Burnt or Melted Wires. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
