Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): popping sound, flywheel bolt, heat problem

Question
Thanks for the help. It is running good. But, one more question. I had taken the valves out and cleaned the carbon off and looked at the port. It looked fine. When I put it back together one of the cups feel out when I remove the spring. I put the cup back, with spring on top and clip. The mower runs fine untill you go down a hill and back up then oil gets in the cylinder. Does the cup go on and the spring hold it in place. I have not checked yet to see if it is on correctly. I am sure this is what is letting the oil in.

Question -
The flywheel key did sheer, and two more since. Is there a spec on the flywheel bolt. With a new key it is running well and the heat problem is solved. But I do have a leak at the head even though I put in the new gasket and followed directions on sequence and torque. It also smokes from the muffler. I though that may be common for a while with a new block that had some oil in it.

Question -
I just put a new short block on a 15hp Craftsman
B&S riding mower. Now it has no power, pops like a go cart and the muffler gets red hot. It also is hard to start. I checked the valves according to the specs and they were close. The oil fill had come off on the other motor while mowing and locked it up.

 Hello Stan:

When you Reassembled the Engine did you Set the Coil at .020in from the Flywheel? Also, Sometimes the Engine Will Not Operate Properly with the Valve Lash Set to Factory Specifications. Open the Valve Lash by .003in and that May take care of the Popping. I have had New Complete Engines that the Valve Lash has had to be Increased in order to Stop the Type of Problem you are having. Check the Flywheel Key. If the Key is Damaged it will cause this Problem. Is the Muffler a New One. If Carbon from the Old Engine has Clogged up the Muffler it will Create a Back Pressure and the Engine Will Pop and the Muffler will Turn Cherry Red. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Hello Stan:

Torque the Flywheel to 150 Foot Pounds. If Required to Stop Flywheel Key Shear Increase by 10 Foot pounds Until Flywheel Key Shear has Beem Eliminated. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

Answer
 Hello Stan:

You are saying Cup, so I take it to mean you have the Umbrella Valve Seals. The Cup is Put Onto the Valve Stem  then the Spring then the Lock. Some off these Ride on the Valve Stem Itself. Others have a Spring Clip on One End that Locks Onto the Valve Guide. You are Looking in the Right Location Unless the Crankcase Vent Is Not Working Properly. The Vent will Cause the Same Symptoms. A Little Smoke is Going to Come from the Short Block. It must Seat In. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck
