Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Smoke, piston ring, yardman

Question
I have an eight year old Yardman that started smoking badly. It is coming from what appears to be an exhaust manifold (located just under the front part of engine) Could you suggest some things I might try to determine the cause?  I know I should have it checked out by a pro. but
I'm not able to do that at this time. FYI  I have very little knowledge of these things but I manage ok for a girl!! Any ideas are much appreciated  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Lyn-
Smoking whhile running is one of two things.  If the mower runs ok and dosen't stutter & miss- you've got a piston ring issue and a rebuild is your only remedy.  If it misses  and sputters, lacks power, your float may be stuck and you're dumping fuel into it.

lemme know how it turns out
