Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh 10 HP ignition, spark plug gap, defective coil

Question
John, Per your first E-mail I cut and removed the Mega Fire, and cut the second module to the coil. The engine fired right up and ran. However, it backfires continuously spitting flames from the exhaust. Any thoughts?

Question -
I have an ignition problem, the spark is there upon first pulls, but fails quickly. I replaced the spark plug, and coil. The result was no better. I added a Mega fire Electronic module (+) side to the coil per diagram. No spark at all. Any suggestions. I have checked and cleaned all grounding point. no corrosion.

 Hello Roger:

Send me the Model Number Off of the Engine, Please. I can be of More Help with the Model Number. However, The Ignition Module is Inside the Coil on Most Newer Models and the Mega Fire Conflicts with the Coil. Take the Mega Fire Off. You may have a Defective Coil. Even New they can be Defective. Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

Answer
 Hello Roger:

1- Check the Flywheel Key. If the Key is Damaged it Will Cause this Problem. The Flywheel Key Times the Engine. 2- Check the Coil Clearance from the Flywheel. It should be .020in. 3- Check the Spark Plug Gap. Should be ,035in. 4- Check the Valve Lash on the Exhaust Valve. Should be .017in Clearance Between the Valve Stem and the Valve tappet. 5- Check for a Burnt Valve(the valve must be removed from the engine block to perform this check). Hope this Helps. Let me know what Happens, Please.

 Good Luck
