I bought a used 4hp 22" yard machine self propelled and the last time I tried to crank it, it snatched the cord from hand and locked up. I checked the blades and can still turn them by hand. I do not know what is wrong.  Help me please.

 Hello Pat:

 If I Understand you Correctly; you can Turn the Engine using the Blade but Cant Pull the Starter Handle. If this is Correct, then Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine Cover) which has the Starter Rivited to it. Does the Starter Handle Pull Out of the Housing? The Starter Spring may have Broken and Jammed the Starter. Send the Make and Model Off of the Engine and I can be of More Assistance. Try this and Let me know what Happens, Please.
