Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 407777 18.5 HP (or 22HP?), broken bolts, broken bolt

Question
Hello Eric,
Not sure of the horse power. My question is; the pulley to crankshaft bolt broke off in the crankshaft. Any suggestions on how to remove it? (I didn't hit anything). I doubt if an easy out would do it. The encapsulation for the electric clutch melted but the windings look ok, don't know if this will be a problem yet. Thank you for your help. Dave

Answer
Due to the cost of the engine I would recommend contacting a local machine shop.  You may have to remove the engine for them but I would let them remove the bolt.  They have more tools and are properly set up to deal with broken bolts.

I haven't had much sucess with broke bolts.  If you break a drill bit or easy out in the hole you will cause more damage and not to mention those tools are even harder to remove than the broken bolt.

Another option is crankshaft replacement but I would start with a machine shop.

Let me know if this helps.
Eric
