Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Safety Bar Murray Push Mower, engine cowling, hose clamp

Question
I bought an inexpensive Murray Lawn Mower 3 years ago - used for some rugged terrain on my property.  Over the winter the cable connecting to the safety bar became disconnected.  While getting mulch at a local Mower/Saw shop, I purchased another cable (didn't need) and the mechanic sold me a clip to put on the safety bar - "slides right on, no need to bolt on".  I tried to do that when I got home, but it will Not stay in place on the safety bar and the end of the cable keeps falling out.  The 'clip' has a slot on one side opposite a small hole the cylindrical portion of the cable fits into.  It is a hike back to the place I got this from and hate to drag my mower back.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Steven-
Although I don't normally recommend by-passing safeties, in this case, I an recommend a quick fix until you get the opportunity to have occasion for a trip back.
If you have a GOOD grade hose clamp laying about that will close down enough, take the loose end of the safety release, loop it and use the clamp to bind it to the push bar on the mower.  Mow away- unitl you get a new safety cable.
An alternative is to tie a coat hanger to the safety release lever under the top engine cowling.  Lemme know if you wanna do that I'll tell ya how to get the top off. heh
good luck!  Lemme know how it goes!
