Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda lawnmower, honda lawnmower, correct terminology

Question
last year my son ran lawnmower low on oil and it locked up.....repair shop was able to unlock.  I've cut yard about 8 times to date without any problem but today it starting making a loud knocking noise and shut off. The pull rope pulls out with no compression (I believe is the correct terminology) so I cannot start it.  So what do you think....I know there must be engine damage so do I rebuild or just bite the bullet and buy new lawnmower.  Thanks for some direction.....

Answer
Hi Lauraine ,

What you describe would most likely point to internal issues.  I would make sure that the engine is actually cranking over when you pull the recoil and that the recoil itself is not malfunctioning.  If the engine turns over with no compression, there probably is internal damage.  Depending on how new the mower is, will depend on your repair or replace decision.  Also an estimate of repair cost will be helpful.

Let me know how you make out.
