Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ryobi trimmer, ryobi trimmer, exhaust muffler

Question
I have a Ryobi multi attachment trimmer that is 5 years old.  At the end of last year it developed a problem where it would conk out when given more throttle in non-choke mode.  The local shop fixed it, and the tag said adjusted idle.  The problem is back.  How do I adjust the idle myself?

Answer
Hiya Jeff-
There are two adjustment screws, the idle screw is between the  throttle plate and the engine block.
However I do not think that is your problem.  In addition, it sounds to me like the shop is intentionally misleading you saying thats what they adjusted to fix it last time.  See, if YOU try it, and it dosen't work, you'll take it back to them, and they can charge you even more to correct your misadjustment (really- this just represents the most unscrupulous of shops- I'm NOT saying that this is your case).  In any case, if it cranks and idles well- don't adjust the idle.  If it quits when you hit the gas- try adjusting the high speed screw (the OTHER adjustment screw)which is between the air cleaner and the throttle plate.  You want to turn it counter clockwise in 1/4 turn increments and try to give it gas after every adjustment (note- keep up with your turns).  If this dosen't improve things, return the screw to near its original setting and take apart your exhaust muffler.  You may find this area full of soot- which will also cause your symptoms.
