I have a 15.5 hp 38" cut John Deere Sabre hydrostatic drive riding mower.  When releasing the brake the engine stalls so I cannot move it.  If left in neutral with brake locked it runs fine.  Blade is not engaged.  Ran fine last time I parked it.

Answer -
 Hello John:

Have you checked the Safety Switches? Let me know what you find. Also check for a wire getting pinched to ground when moving the Clutch/Brake.

 Respectfully

 John

Answer
Hiya John-
OK- lets start with the obvious
1- Make DARN sure your drive belt isn't off a pulley (this will lock her down in a hurry)
2- Verify freedom of movement of ALL rotating elements (flip the mower on its side, manually turn every pully in neutral)
3- Your mower has a disc brake on the side of the hydrostatic transaxle, make sure the brake is functional an releases (return spring could be off)
Get back to me after these checks!
hope this helps!
