Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): belt drive transmission-brake, belt tension, transmission brake

Question
i have a 1984 wizard riding mower, that doesn't brake correctly.i have adjusted the belt tension, replaced the drive belt, and checked the belt guards.it's the old style where half depressed is the clutch and total depressed is the brake,it can take up to six feet to stop.the brake works in the transmission, which is a closed system.can't find a manual for this old a model.if you can help would really appreciate it,the old thing runs and workes great, just doesn't want to stop. thanks.       dan

Answer
 Hello Dan:

If you look on the Transaxle on the Right side; if you were sitting on the mower, you will find the Brake Assembly. The center nut is the adjuster nut for the Brake Pads. These are like the Front disc pads on a car but much smaller. If you tighten this nut (1/2 turn at a time) and still dont have brakes then you need to replace these pads.  Hope this helps.

 Good Luck
