Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Starting problem Scotts Tractor 1642, scotts lawn tractor, crankshaft pulley

Question
I have a 5 year old scotts lawn tractor 1642 w/Kohler engine, hydrostatic drive.  The last 2 times I have cut my lawn I had a difficult time starting the mower.  I get a clicking noise and sometimes no noise.  And then if it does start to turn over, it takes more than the usual time to crank it over.  Battery is about 1 year old.  I did rig the safety switch on the seat so I could get up w/o it shutting off....but it's been like that for 2 years.  Could it be the starter? thanks

Answer
 Hello Nick:

1- Did the Battery have the Largest Cold Cranking Amps that would fit into the Battery compartment. 2- Check the Starter Soleniod. 3- Check the Battery Cables for Corrosion. If you have to replace the Battery Cables, use automotive Cables. The larger the Diameter cable the better the amp flow and the longer the Starter will last. 4- to check the starter; remove all the belts from the Crankshaft pulley. 5- Try to start the engine. Does it turn eaiser. If so get back to me so we can go over possible problems with the Cutter deck. Keep me updated please. Hope this Helps.

 Good Luck
