I have a Craftsman Lawn Tractor with a Kohler 15HP engine (model # CV15S, Type # PS-41526). While repairing I cracked the started. It backfired a couple of times and I replaced the started. It now runs great when started but when I release the clutch it conks out. If I keep my foot on the clutch the engine will continue to run perfectly, just stops when the clutch is released or when I engage the mower (clutch is engaged when I do this). What might be the issue?

It sounds like the carb may need to be adjusted.  Try opening the high speed mixture screw 1/4 of a turn and see if this still happens.  If the mixture isn't sufficiently rich, the engine will be down on power and will do what you describe.  If you continue to open the high speed mixture screw and it has little or no effect, the carb may need to be cleaned as this indicates a blockage in the high speed circuit in the carb.  Hope this helps.
