Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD Riding Mower Will Not Start, mtd riding mower, faulty component

Question
I purchased a used MTD riding mower from my sister. I do not have any idea how old it is. The numbers on the label plate are 132-669O062/A282C5. Below that number are two other numbers  95186  and  #135.  I usually do not get any response when I turn the key to start it, but can sometimes get it to turn over if I gently rock the mower forward and back while turning the key. I have had to replace the battery twice, but they quickly are drained. I end up jumping the battery from my car. This is not a safe process, because it causes me to bypass the safety switch on the seat, stand to the side and engage the clutch, while leaning over to reach the switch and rock the mower. Does the fact that rocking the mower sometimes causes it to turn over give any indication to the faulty component? Rocking it doesn't always work.

Answer
Hi Brian,

The battery becoming drained, is either due to the charging circuit not functioning or a short, causing a battery drain.  You will need to check the wiring with a meter.
The non cranking issue is probably due to a faulty safety switch, maybe on the clutch.  The switch may be out of adjustment and making contact when you rock the mower.
Again, some testing with a meter and tracing the wiring should turn up some answers.

Let me know how you make out.
