Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman riding lawnmower, mower deck, emergency brake

Question
Hi John,
I have a 6 year old craftsman riding lawnmower. I engaged the emergency brake to get off the mower without turning it off, when I released the brake, the mower would not go. To step on the gas will throw black smoke (like a belt) Is this something I can repair? As it sits it cannot be pushed on to a trailer so it will be very difficult to take it anywhere to be fixed.  I feel it is something that I can look into with the help of a friend. If you can help me I would appreciate your expert advice

Answer
 Hello Cathy

Im never going to tell someone they cant do it unless they really can't. If special tools are required I will say so and if I feel it's something a shop needs to do. I feel im obligated to say so.

The Mower Deck will Have to be Removed. The problem is in the linkage located under the Mower.  If you feel you wish to attempt to locate and make this repair. I will be here to assist all I can.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
