Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn mower Carb., water in the fuel, float valve

Question
My husband thinks that the fuel inlet valve is faulty because no gas is getting through.  He can get it to run with ether but it doesn't stay running.  He is wondering how to take off the fuel bowl.

Answer
Hi Marg,

The fuel bowl is secured by either the high speed mixture screw or a bolt.  Unscrew it and the bowl will come off.
Since you can keep it running by adding fuel, the
carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  It may be clogged at the inlet float valve but if not, you will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a
small wire.   Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.
Also check for water in the fuel and a good flow from the fuel tank.

Let me know how you make out.
