Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine cuts off only when under load., gas tank, kill switch

Question
To make a long story as short as I can, I bought my son a go kart with a 3.5 tecumseh. It ran fine for hours when it just cut off. I found that the screw had fallen out of the choke flap and the flap was laying inside the carb. I have never found the screw that holds the flap. It may have fallen out into the grass when I dismantled the air cleaner? I have done everything to find it except remove the head.

I replaced the flap and installed a new screw. The kart started, although not as easily as before, and idled great. I could put it on blocks and hold the throttle wide open and she would just run great. The problem is when my son would try to ride it, he could take off, reach top speed and it would just cut off on him. It would start right back with one pull, he could take off again but with the same results. I have adjusted the carb. numerous times with no success.

Just for giggles I have a rebuilt carb for a 3.5 hp tecumseh that I put on it. It is still giving me the exact same results. It does not smoke, the air filter is fine, there is no dirt in the gas tank, and I have even tried disconnecting the kill switch. I am clueless. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

-Thanks!

Answer
Hi Nate,

The sudden cut off, seems like an ignition problem.  Especially because of the same result with another carb.  I suspect a bad coil but they usually fail when hot and take a while to cool off and work again.  Maybe something is loose and causing the problem from the vibration at high speed.  I don't know.

Let me know how you make out.
